Flossing and Other Children’s Dental Health Tips

From the moment a child’s first tooth makes its appearance, oral hygiene must be a top priority for all parents of small children. Establishing good oral health habits early on is the best way to make brushing and flossing an expected part of daily life. By heeding some key advice on the subject of dental care in young patients, parents everywhere can help keep their kids’ teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

First of all, the choice of toothbrush for a child is important. It is best to select a brush that is small in size and features soft bristles. It is not uncommon for dentists to suggest brushing with only plain water until age two in order to avoid excessive swallowing of fluoride-containing products that can lead to discoloration. If your dentist gives the green light to using toothpaste, make sure to place just a pea-sized dot of an American Dental Association-approved product onto the brush for your child’s twice-daily dental care sessions.

Once your child has two teeth next to one another, flossing should become a daily routine. Floss picks can make it easier to get in between the teeth of squirmy kids who are not yet familiar with flossing. After additional teeth have appeared, it is time to ask your dentist whether there is any need for supplemental fluoride and if dental sealants may be a good idea to help prevent decay.

Because most kids are unable to thoroughly brush their own teeth until the age of six or so, it is important to monitor brushing and flossing sessions and provide assistance when needed. Demonstrating proper techniques on your own teeth is an ideal way to show your children the right way to clean their teeth and gums.

Ultimately, following these handy dental care tips and making regular visits to your dentist in Indiana for examinations and cleanings is the best strategy for keeping your child’s teeth and gums their healthiest. Teaching the importance of good dental health is a gift that really will last a lifetime.
