The Ins and Outs of Tooth Extraction

The Ins and Outs of Tooth Extraction

The Ins and Outs of Tooth Extraction

Don’t let the fear of a tooth extraction send you into a panic attack. Although having a tooth pulled may not be a particularly pleasant experience, this routine and often necessary procedure could spare you the unnecessary pain and expense of more serious problems if left untreated. One of the best ways to overcome any concerns you may have is to learn as much as possible about the procedure. Here are three steps you can take to prepare.

1. Ask your dentist about what you should expect during the extraction. While tooth extractions are generally simple, if you understand how the procedure is performed it should help to reduce any anxiety. Your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area. Then the tooth will be rocked back and forth to loosen it before it’s removed from its socket. You may feel a dull pressure, but you shouldn’t have pain during the procedure.

2. Make sure you receive clear guidelines about what you should do after the extraction. The correct dental care will speed the healing process and lower the risk of infection. Until your mouth returns to normal in about one to two weeks, you’ll need to avoid certain foods and activities.

3. Find out the cost of an extraction before the procedure and know how much of it your insurance will cover. Costs depend on the difficulty of the tooth being extracted. If cost is an issue, ask a family dentistry expert at Wadas Dental Center about affordable payment options.

While a tooth extraction is usually a simple dental procedure, if you have higher-than-normal fear, you may want to consider sedation dentistry at Wadas Dental Center. Prior to the extraction, you’ll be prescribed medication that will help you relax.
