Understanding and Preventing Serious Gum Disease in Children

Gum disease in children is more common than you may realize, and it could lead to early tooth loss if not recognized and treated. Three types of periodontal disease are common in kids and teens. Chronic gingivitis is the most common diagnosis. This early stage of disease can often be reversed with good oral hygiene. Aggressive periodontitis is more serious. It typically affects only the first molars and incisors of teens and young adults. Unlike most other forms of periodontal disease, it is not caused by a large buildup of dental plaque or calculus, but it can cause significant bone loss. Children entering puberty may become victims of generalized aggressive periodontitis; this form does involve plaque and tartar buildup, and it usually affects the entire mouth.

Looking Out for the Signs of Periodontal Disease

Keeping your child free from gum disease starts with being aware of its major symptoms:

  • Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing or for unexplained reasons
  • Puffy, bright red gums
  • Receding gums that may expose tooth roots
  • Persistent bad breath that does not respond to oral hygiene

Adolescence: A Crucial Stage for the Health of Gums

Surging hormone levels during adolescence and puberty increase blood circulation in gum tissues. Gum sensitivity and stronger inflammatory reactions often occur during this period, so maintaining excellent dental hygiene is very important. In some cases, your child’s dentist may recommend periodontal therapy to prevent damage to the connective tissues and bones that surround teeth.

Nipping Problems in the Bud or Preventing them Altogether

If periodontal disease is diagnosed early, successful treatment is more likely. Check your child’s gums and teeth for signs of gingivitis at home, and be sure that he or she also receives a thorough periodontal exam during regularly scheduled dental visits. Teach and enforce excellent oral hygiene habits, and set a good example by maintaining them yourself.
