Understanding the Stages of Gum Disease

Family dentistry professionals see the unfortunate results of gum disease every day. Because so many people fail to seek an affordable dentist and get regular dental care, many eventually lose their teeth to periodontal disease. The early symptoms of gum disease are manageable with conservative treatments, but once the damage progresses, more invasive and expensive dental care measures are necessary. To understand how damage occurs, take a closer look at the different stages of gum disease.
Gingivitis: How It Begins
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gum tissue that supports the teeth. Symptoms include red, swollen gums and bleeding during brushing and flossing. It’s typically a result of poor dental care, which leads to the accumulation of plaque and tartar. Gingivitis can usually be reversed if treated promptly, but any untreated inflammation can progress to periodontal disease.
Periodontal Disease: The Next Stage
While gingivitis is the infection and inflammation of the gums only, periodontal disease occurs when the condition affects the bone below the gums. In periodontal disease, gums recede and deep pockets of infection form. As the condition progresses, teeth may loosen and fall out.
Treatment for Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease
Gingivitis usually responds well to a strict dental care regimen, which includes frequent brushing, daily flossing, and medicated mouth rinses. When it has progressed to periodontal disease, more invasive and intensive professional dental care is required, such as root planing or scaling to remove hardened tartar. In severe cases of periodontal disease, gum surgery is required to repair damage and reduce the size of infected pockets. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed, as well.
