Wisdom Teeth - When Extraction Is the Right Answer

It’s Not Wise to Ignore Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth - When Extraction Is the Right Answer

The four back corners of your mouth are the sites for your third molars to erupt, commonly known as wisdom teeth. If you are a young adult between the ages of 17 and 21, you may discover that they are making their entrance with pain, swelling, or other symptoms. If there’s not enough room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth to erupt, they become trapped inside your gum tissues where they can lead to a number of serious problems.

A wisdom teeth dentist can tell if your teeth are impacted and need to be surgically removed. You may require wisdom tooth extractions if they are causing any of the following problems:

  • Tooth decay
  • Tooth or jaw pain
  • Gum disease
  • Infection
  • Fluid-filled cysts
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Tumors

Even if the third molars are not causing any problems now, your dentist in Indiana may suggest that you undergo wisdom tooth extractions. This will prevent problems later in life when extractions are more complicated and nerves do not heal as easily. Tooth extractions can also be part of an orthodontic treatment plan or a restoration process.

Your mouth changes over the years and as you get older, your risk of developing issues with your wisdom teeth increases. If you keep your wisdom teeth, you’ll need to be sure an affordable dentist monitors them regularly for potential problems.
